Food Packaging: Scientific Developments Supporting Safety and Innovation

As for the previous symposia on Food Packaging, the emphasis of the event was put on providing scientists a platform for the exchange of research results and to stimulate debate on innovation in scientific approaches and new packaging techniques.

The current issue of Food Additives and Contaminants comprises 12 papers covering topics selected from the 26 oral presentations and 150 posters presented at the 6th International Symposium on Food Packaging ‘Scientific Developments Supporting Safety and Innovation’. The symposium was held on 16-18 November 2016 in Barcelona, Spain, and was organised by ILSI Europe’s Packaging Materials Task Force.

The symposium comprised five sessions: (1) Progress in risk assessment; (2) Safety challenges arising from renewable and recycled FCMs; (3) Safety-by-design; (4) Innovation packaging and emerging technologies and (5) Future challenges in food packaging processing and food processing equipment.

This successful 3-day event was attended by 313 participants from 43 countries, representing scientists from universities, companies, government and research institutions. This multidisciplinary audience from all over the world demonstrated the growing interest in food packaging-related topics and demonstrates the ever-growing importance of periodically reopening a scientifically recognised forum at international level. One of the aims of the ILSI Europe’s symposia is to promote the debate on new developments and innovation in the scientific assessment of sanitary aspects of food packaging, as well as on novel technological trends in this field.
