	From the earliest observations of differing microbes associated with the human body in the late 1600s, and beginnings of research in the 1800s there has been a rich history of scientific endeavour focusing on what is now known as the human microbiome. Who has not heard of Pasteur, Koch and Metchnikoff and their beliefs in the roles of microorganisms in human health and disease? The foresight of these pioneers, and others, prepared the foundations of a field of scientific study that we now believe can support human health in many ways.
