	This Symposium on Scientific Development of Food Packaging:  Innovations, Safety and Sustainability is the first state-of-the science food packaging scientific meeting to be organized by ILSI SEA Region focusing on the topic. It will serve as a regional forum for sharing scientific updates, technological innovations and advancement, to addressing safety, environmental and sustainability concerns while exploring the emerging trends of interest and relevance to all stakeholders. The symposium will bring together international and regional experts; food safety and food packaging professionals; representatives from government and regulatory agencies; as well as academics and researchers from Southeast Asia and other regions. The thematic sessions and presentations will provide insights into the different perspectives, science, and regulatory updates, highlight priority research areas as well as discuss the benefits vs risk paradigm on food packaging and its communication.

Food packaging plays an integral role in providing safe, nutritious and sustainable food supply to the global consumers. Advances in innovative technologies, changing consumption trends and consumer preferences have led to the development of an array of food packaging material used for food products and by the food services industry. However, there are now increasing awareness and concerns on the development and widespread use of non-degradable food packaging materials that have led to negative environmental impacts. For example, styrofoam boxes, cartons, plastics utensils and polyolefin packaging for retail, ready-to-deliver and ready-to-eat foods from food services and others have resulted in the drastic increase of solid waste in the environment. Concerted efforts are now ongoing by government, industry, and researchers to help address and reduce the utilization and impact of such non-degradable food contact materials.
Along with the emergence and application of packaging technologies, measures and regulations have been established to ascertain the safe uses of food additives and food contact materials by international bodies through agreed safety assessment methods and evaluation processes for adoption by various health authorities. However, there remain wide differences in the regulations associated with food packaging, contaminants, and recyclable food contact materials between regions and among countries. An understanding of these differences and the scientific process used for evaluation and approval would benefit all the stakeholders to ensure our foods are safe and our food supply system remain sustainable.

Guidelines for poster abstract submission:

We are now accepting poster abstracts for any of the three broad theme topics for the Symposium on Scientific Development of Food Packaging: Innovations, Safety, and Sustainability. Finalists will be selected to give a poster presentation. There is no limit to the number of abstracts that you may submit. The abstract must be submitted in English, and poster presentations must be given in English. No translation service will be provided during the symposium. Please submit an abstract that relates to any of the three theme topics below. So as not to limit creativity, the sub-topics are only suggestions.
Abstract should contain:

Title: Bold, Trebuchet MS with font size of 11

Author(s): Full name of authors, the name of presenter must be underlined, and indicate the corresponding author with an asterisk (*).

Authors' affiliation: List all affiliation accordingly in Trebuchet MS, font 11.  Provide email of the corresponding author in Trebuchet MS font 9.

The abstract should include introduction, objectives, methodology, results, and discussion, as well as significance. A spacing of 1.15pt.  (Abstract must be written in English). Length of the abstract should be 250-300 words. No figures, tables or references allowed in the abstract. You may find the template of abstract below.

All abstracts must be submitted via online form before August 19, 2019 for the screening process. Once the abstract is submitted, no changes can be made. A notification email will be sent to you to acknowledge that we have received your abstract. At least one of the authors, preferably the first author, is expected to be in attendance to present the poster during the poster session . Please do not submit an abstract if you or your co-authors cannot attend the symposium.
The submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the ILSI SEA Region Food Packaging Task Force. Authors will be informed of the outcome via email. Accepted abstracts and author bios will be included in the Symposium Program and posted on the symposium webpage. After the meeting, the abstracts will remain available to the public.
If your poster has been selected but you are unable to attend the symposium, please send a representative who is the co-author of the poster abstract to attend and present at the symposium. Kindly notify us (ilsisea@ilsisea.org.sg) of this change as soon as possible.

This symposium being co-organized by Nutrition Society of Malaysia, a professional body, is HRFD-claimable. Local participants should advise their organization's HR department to apply prior to event using the symposium program and list of speakers.
Malaysian government officers who wish to make payment through their departments can use e-perolehan to register for the symposium by selecting Nutrition Society of Malaysia.

	This Symposium on Scientific Development of Food Packaging:  Innovations, Safety and Sustainability is the first state-of-the science food packaging scientific meeting to be organized by ILSI SEA Region focusing on the topic. It will serve as a regional forum for sharing scientific updates, technological innovations and advancement, to addressing safety, environmental and sustainability concerns while exploring the emerging trends of interest and relevance to all stakeholders. The symposium will bring together international and regional experts; food safety and food packaging professionals; representatives from government and regulatory agencies; as well as academics and researchers from Southeast Asia and other regions. The thematic sessions and presentations will provide insights into the different perspectives, science, and regulatory updates, highlight priority research areas as well as discuss the benefits vs risk paradigm on food packaging and its communication.

Food packaging plays an integral role in providing safe, nutritious and sustainable food supply to the global consumers. Advances in innovative technologies, changing consumption trends and consumer preferences have led to the development of an array of food packaging material used for food products and by the food services industry. However, there are now increasing awareness and concerns on the development and widespread use of non-degradable food packaging materials that have led to negative environmental impacts. For example, styrofoam boxes, cartons, plastics utensils and polyolefin packaging for retail, ready-to-deliver and ready-to-eat foods from food services and others have resulted in the drastic increase of solid waste in the environment. Concerted efforts are now ongoing by government, industry, and researchers to help address and reduce the utilization and impact of such non-degradable food contact materials.
Along with the emergence and application of packaging technologies, measures and regulations have been established to ascertain the safe uses of food additives and food contact materials by international bodies through agreed safety assessment methods and evaluation processes for adoption by various health authorities. However, there remain wide differences in the regulations associated with food packaging, contaminants, and recyclable food contact materials between regions and among countries. An understanding of these differences and the scientific process used for evaluation and approval would benefit all the stakeholders to ensure our foods are safe and our food supply system remain sustainable.

Guidelines for poster abstract submission:

We are now accepting poster abstracts for any of the three broad theme topics for the Symposium on Scientific Development of Food Packaging: Innovations, Safety, and Sustainability. Finalists will be selected to give a poster presentation. There is no limit to the number of abstracts that you may submit. The abstract must be submitted in English, and poster presentations must be given in English. No translation service will be provided during the symposium. Please submit an abstract that relates to any of the three theme topics below. So as not to limit creativity, the sub-topics are only suggestions.
Abstract should contain:

Title: Bold, Trebuchet MS with font size of 11

Author(s): Full name of authors, the name of presenter must be underlined, and indicate the corresponding author with an asterisk (*).

Authors' affiliation: List all affiliation accordingly in Trebuchet MS, font 11.  Provide email of the corresponding author in Trebuchet MS font 9.

The abstract should include introduction, objectives, methodology, results, and discussion, as well as significance. A spacing of 1.15pt.  (Abstract must be written in English). Length of the abstract should be 250-300 words. No figures, tables or references allowed in the abstract. You may find the template of abstract below.

All abstracts must be submitted via online form before August 19, 2019 for the screening process. Once the abstract is submitted, no changes can be made. A notification email will be sent to you to acknowledge that we have received your abstract. At least one of the authors, preferably the first author, is expected to be in attendance to present the poster during the poster session . Please do not submit an abstract if you or your co-authors cannot attend the symposium.
The submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the ILSI SEA Region Food Packaging Task Force. Authors will be informed of the outcome via email. Accepted abstracts and author bios will be included in the Symposium Program and posted on the symposium webpage. After the meeting, the abstracts will remain available to the public.
If your poster has been selected but you are unable to attend the symposium, please send a representative who is the co-author of the poster abstract to attend and present at the symposium. Kindly notify us (ilsisea@ilsisea.org.sg) of this change as soon as possible.

This symposium being co-organized by Nutrition Society of Malaysia, a professional body, is HRFD-claimable. Local participants should advise their organization's HR department to apply prior to event using the symposium program and list of speakers.
Malaysian government officers who wish to make payment through their departments can use e-perolehan to register for the symposium by selecting Nutrition Society of Malaysia.
