Micronutrients and Phytonutrients for Prevention of DNA Damage

Prof Michael Fenech

Genome Health Foundation, Australia

Biography
Prof Michael Fenech, Genome Health Foundation, Australia

Prof Michael Fenech is founder of Genome Health Foundation, Australia. He is recognised internationally for his research in nutritional genomics and genetic toxicology and for developing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay, which is now a standard method used internationally to measure DNA damage in human and mammalian cells. The lymphocyte CBMN assay has been endorsed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the OECD for in vivo radiation bio-dosimetry and in vitro testing of chemical genotoxicity, respectively.

From 1990 to 2018 he worked as a principal research scientist in Australia at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in the field of human nutrition. In 1999-2009 his laboratory further developed the lymphocyte CBMN assay into a 'cytome' assay consisting of six complementary biomarkers of DNA damage and cytotoxicity and, in collaboration with other laboratories, he coordinated the establishment of a similar method for buccal epithelial cells. Both methods are published in Nature Protocols. His key goal is to determine the nutritional, lifestyle and environmental requirements for DNA damage prevention.

Prof Fenech co-founded the HUMN project on micronuclei in human populations in 1997 and the Asia Pacific Nutrigenomics Nutrigenetics Organisation in 2014. Since 2010, he has been an invited speaker at 57 international conferences (10 plenary lectures). His H-index is 88 based on 36,861 total career citations according to Google Scholar.

About the event

The Microplastics Initiative Community of Practice is preparing a webinar series for 2025 centered around four key focus areas: Analytics, Exposure, Biomonitoring, and Health Impact. For this second webinar Dr. Federic Been and Dr. H. Kas, authors of "Improved multivariate quantification of plastic particles in human blood using non-targeted pyrolysis GC-MS" will present a summary of their paper, highlighting key findings, research gaps, and opportunities for future exploration in the field of microplastic (MiP) analytics.

Dr. Marianna Armogida and Dr. Filip Sucharski from Haleon will provide insights into the study's methodology and discuss possible extensions of the findings by linking to another publication "Bioaccumulation of microplastics in decedent human brains"

Following up the talk, Dr. Inge Mulder from Amsterdam UMC will also dig deep into exploring the potential implications of detecting microplastics in the blood, including whether these particles might cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB).

About the event

Food allergies pose a significant health risk to millions globally and remain a primary public health concern. At the upcoming
Food Allergen Asia Conference, government regulators and the food industry will be able to learn and discuss the latest FAO/WHO studies, scientific guidance, and policy recommendations that will impact international standards, regulations, and beyond. Explore the changes to the development of global priority allergen lists, allergen thresholds, and robust risk assessment frameworks that form the backbone of food allergen management and control worldwide. Stay abreast of pressing issues such as precautionary labeling, regionally significant allergens, novel foods and ensuring compliance as the food landscape evolves.

ILSI Europe will participate this year with a presentation about the work of Food Allergen Analytics Task Force on food allergen detection: "Adapting Food Allergen Detection Strategies and Technologies in Response to Evolving FAO/WHO Guidelines"
