The role of vitamin D in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk remains debated despite growing evidence, with observational studies consistently linking low serum vitamin D levels with higher CVD risk. Its role in modulating inflammation and oxidative stress, improving endothelial function, and reducing cardiometabolic risk factors supports a comprehensive, multi-modal approach to cardiovascular health. In Singapore, 30-50% of the population, with prevalence higher in Malay ethnic groups, indoor workers etc., remains vitamin D deficient or insufficient despite year-round sunshine.

ILSI Southeast Asia Region and the Department of Metabolism, Nutrition and Health, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore are hosting a guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Sunil Wimalawansa to share the latest insights on vitamin D and CVD, and its implications in Asia.

Dr. Wimalawansa has published over 300 peer-reviewed research articles (11,100+ citations; h-Index of 40), 45 reviews and proceedings, 15 book chapters, and 5 medical books. He holds five medical patents in cardiovascular, osteoporosis, and preeclampsia of pregnancy. He is the author of the book, "Vitamin D: Everything You Need to Know" (2012).
He has made several seminal contributions to medicine, medical research, public health, and pharmaceuticals. These include development of novel modes of treating osteoporosis, including combination therapies (1985), nitroglycerine (1987), once-a-week bisphosphonates therapy (1995), and a technique to enhance the efficacy of bisphosphonates (1997); and cost-effective therapies, such as nitric oxide donor treatment (e.g., topical nitroglycerine and oral nitrates; 1987) and vitamin E regimens for treating osteoporosis (1997).

About the event

This one-day analytical workshop aims to shed light on the current state of the art in microplastics analytics and to stimulate discussion on future challenges in this rapidly evolving field. One of the key objectives is to advance quantitative exposure assessment in relation to foods and beverages, and to discuss future challenges in this young evolving field. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for professionals from academia, industry, and the public sector to exchange ideas, engage in meaningful discussions, and build valuable cross-disciplinary connections.

Programme

10:00 - Dr. Isabelle Guelinckx (ILSI Europe), Introduction to ILSI Europe
10:10 - Todd Guin (TG Environmental Research), Introduction to Microplastics Initiative & workshop objectives
10:20 - Dr. Dieter Fischer (Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden), Dr. Eva Vizsolyi (OFI), Dr. Nadiia Yakovenko (Microplastics Solution), Dr. Christoph Kappacher (MiqaLab), Current state of art of microplastics analytics
11:40 - Dr. Pietro Gucciardi (CNR), Touching base to 2025 EFSA supporting publication and methods like Raman Technique in MiP detection in foods & beverages
12:20 - Panel discussion
13:00 - Lunch & networking break
14:30 - Breakout rooms
16:30 - Next steps & conclusions

A key outcome of the workshop will lead to the development of a peer-reviewed scientific publication, as well as the further analysis and refinement of the content for a future research proposal - an activity to be initiated in 2026.

Registration

Attendance is limited to stakeholders in microplastics analytics. Free attendance to this workshop is reserved for ILSI Europe members and experts from Academia and the Public Sector. Industry participants from non-ILSI Europe member companies wishing to join are welcome for a fee of €250.
