Abstract: Drawing from the front lines of science communication in today's social media landscape, this presentation explores effective strategies for conveying complex food safety information in an era of viral misinformation. Using recent case studies, including the 2024 Froot Loops controversy, Dr. Steier examines how digital misinformation impacts consumer behavior, regulatory trust, and industry practices. The talk illustrates key approaches for bridging the gap between scientific evidence and public perception through empathetic, platform-specific communication strategies. Attendees will learn about navigating the modern information ecosystem, where social media influencers often command more trust than regulatory bodies, and discover practical frameworks for building public trust through transparency, systems thinking, and evidence-based dialogue. This session addresses emerging challenges in food safety communication and offers actionable insights for professionals working at the intersection of food science, public health, and digital communication.
