Science Board Follow-Up Survey

ILSI U.S. & CANADA

Science Board Follow-Up Survey

Prioritizing new areas for the ILSI U.S. & Canada portfolio

Introduction

Thank you for your input to the Topics and Activities Survey and for the discussion on September 3. Suggestions relating to the existing Vanguard Committees have been passed to those committees. This survey focuses on the new areas that could be added to the ILSI U.S. & Canada portfolio.

Your answers will help Connie Weaver and Stephane select two or three candidates to develop into concept notes for the next Science Board meeting. Responses are collected with your name so that ILSI can follow up with members who offer to lead, contribute or fund; when the feedback is summarized for the Board, results will be presented anonymously. Please complete by Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Candidate Areas

Code Candidate area In one line
T1Working group to establish definitionsConsensus definitions and standardized measures for bioactives, "nutrient", chrononutrition, processed foods, neuromuscular health, etc.
T2Women's healthEvidence gaps across the lifespan — postpartum, perimenopause/menopause, lactation, adolescence: gap maps, screening protocols, evidence-informed guidance.
T3Biomarkers of healthGuardrails and candidate biomarkers of health and performance rather than disease.
T4Nutrient density and food securityHow food production practices, including regenerative agriculture, affect nutrient density and health outcomes; nutrient density and nutrition security.
T5Communicating the benefits (and risks) of processed foods to consumersEvidence-based, concrete examples of what processing does for nutrition and safety.
T6Safety and toxicology of natural colors and flavorsScoping review of natural colors and flavors replacing synthetic ones.
T7Supply chain disruptionsImpact of global supply-chain disruptions on food safety, supply, availability and cost.
T8Getting ahead of threats to the food supplyComplex supply chains, climate change, emerging pathogens, tariffs and economic policy.
T9Nutrition and sustainability consequences of food reformulation and novel processingMethods to evaluate both nutrition and sustainability outcomes; possible external partnership.
T10Technologies to sustain the global food supplyFood security under climate change and population growth.
T11ILSI as a broker for commodity groups to co-fund researchILSI convenes commodity groups and other funders around questions of mutual interest (e.g., regenerative agriculture and nutrient density).
T12Mining clinical trial databases on dietary supplements and healthy agingSecondary analyses of existing trials and cohorts; adding targeted assessments to upcoming trials (e.g., for women's health).
T13 ★Chrononutrition and circadian alignmentFull working-group proposal received: definitions and measurement set, who is affected (e.g., shift workers), timing vs. calories, consumer translation.
T14 ★Neuromuscular health and functional resilience in agingFull working-group proposal received: beyond muscle mass to the nerve-to-muscle pathway; predictive markers; minimum measurement set; nutrition × exercise.
T15Food additive mixturesCombined additive exposure with the diet as the unit of analysis; working group → workshop (early 2027) → publication.

★ = a complete working-group proposal has already been received. T1–T12 were listed by Connie Weaver; T13–T15 were raised in the survey or at the meeting.
