A Partnership for Public Health: The USDA Global Branded Food Products Database
The USDA Global Branded Food Products Database is an example of how multiple sectors can collaborate to benefit public health. This private-public partnership is a collaboration between ILSI North America, USDA, GS1 US, 1WorldSync, Label Insight and the University of Maryland. The goal of this partnership is to strengthen public health and the open sharing of food composition data. The USDA Global Branded Food Products Database enhances the existing USDA FoodData Central with public access to nutrient composition and ingredient information on branded foods and store-brand data provided voluntarily by the food industry. Since its launch in September 2016, the Database has grown to include over 260,000 food and beverage products. In May 2019 the USDA Global Food Products Database was the #1 highest API traffic on data.gov.
