Diversos estudios revelan que el perfil de los consumidores de suplementos nutricionales corresponde a individuos con estilos de vida saludables y ambiente sociodemográfico favorable. Esta investigación pretendió analizar el uso y las características sociodemográficas, antropométricas y de ingesta de los consumidores de suplementos nutricionales, en población urbana costarricense de 15 a 65 años.
En la última década, se han obtenido desarrollos significativos en nuestro conocimiento de la fibra dietética y su función en preservar la salud y reducir el riesgo de enfermedades. El concepto se ha ampliado y la búsqueda de una definición de fibra dietética reconocida universalmente continúa. En la definición de fibra, el énfasis ha cambiado de la metodología analítica al impacto fisiológico y ya no es posible aplicar un método analítico único para medir la cantidad de fibra dietética en los alimentos.
Aunque el conocimiento científico permanece complejo, actualmente los consumidores parecen estar más atentos al concepto de fibra. Sin embargo, está claro que el consumo de fibra en la mayoría de los países desarrollados se encuentra en niveles subóptimos y las estrategias para estimular a los consumidores a aumentar su ingesta de fibra han alcanzado un alto predominio.

La actividad física (AP) y los comportamientos sedentarios (SB) son dos factores de riesgos independientes de enfermedades no transmisibles. El objetivo de este estudio fue utilizar datos objetivos para caracterizar patrones de los grupos sociodemográficos sobre AP y SB en los ocho países Latinoamericanos. 2,732 participantes (de 15 a 65 años) del Estudio Latinoamericano de Nutrición y Salud (ELANS) fueron incluidos.

El propósito de esta investigación fue examinar la prevalencia de sobrepeso, obesidad, niveles de actividad física y de autoestima de la población infantil centroamericana, comparándoles según sexo y país.
