Nutrition Reviews is a peer-reviewed journal that specializes in the publication of authoritative and critical literature reviews on current and emerging topics in nutrition science, food science, clinical nutrition, and nutrition policy. With a current impact factor of 5.291, it is the most highly cited monthly review journal in the field.

Editorial structure: the Editor-in-Chief is supported by a team of up to 4 Associate Editors, a Scientific Advisory Board, and an Editorial Board who serve at the Editor’s invitation. An Editorial Office Manager, employed by ILSI, completes the editorial team. The Editor is responsible for the strategic development and editorial direction of the journal and the overall management of journal editorial operations. Routine responsibilities include evaluating submitted manuscripts, managing the peer review process, soliciting new content, and communicating with authors, reviewers, and the editorial team. The Associate Editors assist the Editor in executing these responsibilities at the direction of the Editor. In collaboration with the editorial team, the staff, and the publisher, the Editor regularly reviews and updates editorial policies to ensure consistency with evolving best practices and industry norms. Author guidelines are updated as needed to ensure accuracy and assist authors. Quality expectations are set by the Editor, in consultation with ILSI’s Director of Publishing and Publications Committee; these are communicated clearly and consistently to the editorial team, authors, and the publisher. The role and function of the Editorial Board and Scientific Advisory Board are determined by the Editor.

Peer review process: the manuscript submission and peer review processes are managed using the Scholar One (Manuscript Central) online system. This system allows authors, reviewers, editors, and staff to perform tasks related to manuscript submissions and peer review independently, online, at any time of day, and from any location.  Many actions are either automated or completed with the assistance of the Editorial Office Manager. Technical support is available through Scholar One, with additional support provided by the editorial office manager and the publisher.

Travel: on an annual basis, the Editor is invited to attend the following meetings: 1) the ILSI Annual Meeting to meet with ILSI’s Publications Committee, Director of Publishing, and the publisher’s representative; and 2) the annual meeting of the journal’s publisher for the editors and executives of its partner journals and societies. Expenses related to these events are covered by ILSI and the publisher, respectively. The Editor may also request in-person editorial meetings for which expenses can be built into the publications budget.

Operational support: all business services and vendor relationships related to the production, sales, and marketing of the journal are managed by ILSI’s Director of Publishing and the journal publisher.

The primary responsibilities of the Editor are to provide editorial leadership and strategic stewardship of the journal and to guide the journal’s editorial direction. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Editor ensures the journal’s content is consistent with its mission, provides value to its readership, and reflects the highest standards of scientific value and integrity; the Editor also ensures journal operations are conducted in accordance with industry standards and best ethical and publishing practices.

The initial tenure for this position is a 3-year term. The maximum tenure limit is 10 years, consisting of two 3-year tenures followed by two 2-year terms. Tenure extensions are decided upon mutual agreement.

Journal Content
In overseeing the journal’s content, the Editor-in-Chief’s specific responsibilities are as follows:

• Act as final arbiter, determining acceptance or rejection of all materials submitted for potential publication.
• Ensure that all review articles accepted for publication have undergone a rigorous, objective, and timely peer review process.
• Ensure that all submissions and reviews are handled as confidential material.
• Ensure a steady supply of high-quality content that is sufficient to meet the journal’s production schedule.
• Manage Associate Editors and oversee performance of their assigned roles and responsibilities, such as coordinating the peer review process.
• Enroll and maintain an active, well respected, and technically competent Editorial Board and Scientific Advisory Board whose members reflect geographical diversity and broad expertise among the nutrition science disciplines.
• Maintain technical currency in and uphold recognized standards of high quality and ethical practice for scholarly publications.
• Enroll and maintain qualified reviewers with diverse areas of expertise to consistently contribute to the peer review process by judging the technical merit of submissions.
• Ensure the journal’s content remains valuable to its readership and inspires growth in journal usage and submissions.
• Maintain technical currency in the overall journal subject matter.
• Communicate clearly, effectively, promptly, and courteously with authors, reviewers, editors, editorial advisors, and journal staff.
• Provide authors with clear reasons for decisions regarding their submissions

Journal Operations
In overseeing the operation of the journal, the Editor’s responsibilities are as follows:

• Provide direction, encouragement, and support to the Associate Editors, giving them clear guidance and feedback to ensure consistency in journal practices.
• Cooperate with editorial and publisher staff to ensure timely publication of journal issues, effective marketing initiatives, and implementation of state-of-the-art technologies in the production process.
• Stay current with publishing technologies to assist and support authors, associate editors, and reviewers.
• Regularly review average turnaround times and ensure submissions are handled in a timely manner.
• Ensure that confidentiality and reviewer anonymity are maintained in accordance with the journal’s single-blind review process.
• Stay current with industry standards regarding best practices in editing, peer review, methods of investigation, research ethics, and publishing ethics.
• Handle author or reviewer disputes, conflicts of interest, and allegations of misconduct promptly, courteously, confidentially, and in accordance with recognized guidelines and best practices, seeking counsel on serious matters from the Owner’s Director of Publishing and the journal’s Publisher.
• Inform the Owner’s Director of Publishing and the Publisher as soon as possible when any matter is discovered in any material or other journal content that appears to be obscene, defamatory of any person, or a breach of confidence or privacy, or an infringement of a copyright or database right.
• Regularly review the journal’s Author Guidelines to ensure consistency with evolving journal standards and best practices in scholarly publishing.
• Oversee the management of the editorial office and related journal administrative functions.
• Ensure active engagement of the journal’s Editorial Board and Scientific Advisory Board through regular communication and biannual review of board members’ performance.
• Treat as confidential and privileged all information pertaining to the journal’s financial and strategic status and objectives.

Relations with Owner
The Editor/Owner relationship is aligned with the guidelines of the World Association of Medical Editors. In stewarding the journal, the Editor’s relationship with the Owner is governed by the following:

• The Editor and Owner are aligned in their desire to fulfill the journal’s mission and to serve the scientific community, and the public at large, by producing a journal that reflects the highest standards for scientific value and integrity
• The Editor is granted full authority over the editorial content of the journal in both print and electronic formats, including how and when information is published, provided that the content is consistent with the journal’s mission and aligned with the priorities described in the first paragraph of this document
