ILSI 2024 Annual Meeting Session 1 – Cultivated Meats: Pioneering Safety in Next-Gen Proteins

In this session, we aim to have a robust discussion to explore regulatory, safety and quality aspects of cultivated products. In addition, we will explore technological advancements, future prospects and consumer perception. Our esteemed panelists will include regulatory, academic and industry partners.

Melanie Abley, PhD, Senior Advisor for Food Safety, Nutrition and Human Health, Office of the Chief Scientist, USDA, USA
Dr. Melanie Abley joined the Office of the Chief Scientist in 2021 as the Senior Advisor for Food Safety, Nutrition and Human Health. In this role, she coordinates scientific collaboration and planning on high priority emerging food safety, nutrition and human health issues. Her work also provides science-based advice to senior leadership to help inform their policy decisions. Dr. Abley first joined the USDA with the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) as a post doc in August of 2011. After her post doc she joined USDA Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) as an Enforcement Investigations and Analysis Officer and later joined the Office of Policy and Program Development (OPPD) Staff within the USDA FSIS. Most recently, Dr. Abley was the Deputy Director of the Risk Management and Innovations Staff with OPPD at USDA FSIS.
