In addition to his role as Session Chair, Dr. Fielding will present, "Targeting Senescent Cells for Healthy Aging."

Roger A. Fielding, Ph.D. serves as Team Lead and Senior Scientist of the Nutrition, Exercise Physiology and Sarcopenia (NEPS) Team at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. He is also Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and the Associate Director of the Boston Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center. Dr. Fielding is an internationally known researcher who studies the underlying mechanisms contributing to the age-associated decline in skeletal muscle mass, the resultant impact on function, and the potential role of exercise, nutrition, physical activity and other therapies on attenuating this process. He has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers (H-index 101). Dr. Fielding has a strong record of extramural funding, including support from the NIH, USDA, foundations and industry. He is a Deputy Editor of the Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences and Calcified Tissue International and Musculoskeletal Research. He has also served as a reviewer on numerous NIH study sections and was elected to the NIH/CSR College of Reviewers. In 2015, he received the Olof Johnell Science Award from the International Osteoporosis Foundation and in 2021 he received the Herbert Fleisch Medal from the same organization.

Philipe de Souto Barreto is professor of Gerontology at the Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse 3, director of the Institute on Aging of Toulouse (Gerontopole of the CHU-Toulouse, WHO Collaborating Center on Frailty, Clinical & Geroscience Research, adnd Geriatric Training), Researcher and Member of the Executive Committee of the Institute IHU HealthAge (Toulouse, France). He has been actively working in the field of physical activity, exercise and functional capacity during aging in the past 15 years. He serves as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging since December 2021.

Short-term Periodic Restricted Feeding Elicits Sex-specific Benefits that Persist Long Term in Non-human Primates – Isabel Beerman, PhD, Stadtman Investigator, National Institute on Aging, USA

Abstract: Dietary restriction has shown benefits in physiological, metabolic, and molecular signatures associated with aging but is a difficult lifestyle to maintain for most individuals. In mice, a less restrictive diet that allows for cyclical periods of reduced calories mitigates aging phenotypes, yet the effects of such an intervention in a genetically heterogenous, higher-order mammal has not been examined. Here, using middle-aged Rhesus macaques matched for age and sex, we show that a regimen of 4 days of low-calorie intake followed by 10 days of ad libitum feeding (4:10 diet) performed in repeating cycles over 12 weeks led to significant loss of weight and fat percentage, despite the free access to food for most of the study duration. We show the 4-day restriction period is sufficient to drive alterations to the serum metabolome characterized by substantial differences in lipid classes. These phenotypes were paralleled by changes in the gut microbiome of restricted monkeys that highlight the involvement of a microbiome-metabolome axis. This regimen shows promising aging-mitigating phenotypes, with some sex-dimorphic responses, including residual memory of the diet. As many calorie restriction interventions are difficult to sustain, we propose that this short-term diet may be easier to adhere to and have benefits directly relevant to human aging.

Isabel Beerman, PhD, is a Stadtman Investigator at the National Institute on Aging at the NIH. Her team is focused on understanding epigenetic and underlying mechanisms that drive adult stem cell aging. She serves as a board member for the American Gerontology Association (AGE) and has received the Nathan Shock New Investigator Award from the Gerontology Society of America (GSA). Isabel is also an associate editor for several journals, contributing expertise in hematopoiesis, stem cell biology, epigenetics and aging.
