About the workshop
Background & objectives
One promising alternative to reduce the environmental footprint of packaging is the use of recycled materials. In Europe, the PPWR (packaging and packaging waste regulation) will require between 10 and 35% minimum recycled content for plastic food packaging by 2030 (and more from 2040).
Nowadays, recycled food contact plastic includes mainly PET as it is the only type of recycled plastic listed as suitable technology by the regulation in Europe and for which there are clear evaluation criteria defined by authorities such as EFSA. Consequently, the development of mechanically recycled plastic beyond PET is very limited in Europe so far.
Therefore, the objective of this workshop is to reflect on the safety assessment of recycling processes for polyolefins and polystyrene and to try to determine the most appropriate evaluation criteria for the safety of these materials. These requirements would help ensure all the potential safety risks are taken into account and controlled with a holistic approach from feedstock to final articles reaching the consumer in compliance with the high standards of safety expected by EFSA.
(PET is out of scope, this is not a training workshop - purpose is to discuss and prepare guidelines with criteria for recycling of PO and PS)
Workshop Structure
The workshop will last about 8 hours in total, split over 2 sessions. The first session will be a plenary session with 2 parts:
- Introduction of the workshop objectives and brief presentation of ILSI Europe and the Packaging Materials Task Force.
- Presentation of current context for the development of novel recycling technologies in Europe: focus on polyolefins and polystyrene
During the 2nd session, participants will be split in 2 groups and will be organized to collect their feedback on the following aspects:
- Opportunities and challenges in setting evaluation criteria for the safety assessment of recycled polyolefins
- Opportunities and challenges in setting evaluation criteria for the safety assessment of recycled polystyrene
Then, each group will be invited to share their feedback with the entire audience.
The 2nd session will end by discussing the relevance and feasibility of establishing evaluation criteria for the recycling process of polyolefin and/or Polystyrene.

There is increasing evidence that one size does not fit all and that personalised nutrition/lifestyle approaches may help in reversing the increasing prevalence of chronic metabolic diseases. An expert group, comissionned by the Dietary Carbohydrates Task Force, is addressing different aspects of precision nutrition in a systematic review of current knowledge.
This workshop aims to complement the review by discussing perspectives on how to effectively implement and utilize precision nutrition in the context of various factors such as sleep, physical activity, socioeconomic status, and psychosocial factors.

About the event
Join us for a lunchtime webinar to understand how recent EU regulatory developments may affect your business.
The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) represents a fundamental change to the way companies report on sustainability related issues such as climate change, biodiversity, stakeholders, and business conduct in line with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRSs). This is one element of an effort by the EU to become the global leader in sustainable business transformation, with the CSRD operating alongside other pieces of legislation such as the Sustainable Finance Taxonomy, the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation, and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.
Feedback on the first iteration of the ESRSs has resulted in the publication of draft amended standards in July 2025; tune in to hear about how these changes may impact your reporting obligations in the coming years, and to gain an understanding of the interplay between the various legislative requirements developing at a supra-national level.
Who should attend?
This webinar is designed for professionals in the food industry who are involved in shaping, implementing, or communicating sustainability strategies within their organisations. In particular, it will be relevant for those working in:
- Sustainability & ESG teams: responsible for aligning company practices with EU sustainability requirements.
- Corporate strategy & risk management: assessing how regulatory changes affect long-term planning and competitiveness.
- Supply chain, procurement & sourcing: ensuring agricultural and raw material sourcing aligns with new disclosure standards.
- R&D, product development & innovation - understanding how sustainability reporting frameworks connect to product claims and design.
- Public affairs, communications & corporate responsibility: translating reporting obligations into stakeholder engagement and brand reputation.
- Senior management & board members: overseeing compliance and strategic positioning in the context of EU sustainable finance regulations.
