Coronaviruses are an extensive family of viruses that can cause disease in both animals and humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections that can range from the common cold to more serious illnesses such as Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). (CCSS, 2020)

The "One Health" approach was introduced in the early 2000s, summarizing in a few words, a notion known for more than a century, to emphasize that human, animal and plant health are interdependent and linked to ecosystems in which they coexist. (UCI, 2020)

This new paradigm constitutes, in itself, a proactive strategy to manage in all its scale and complexity of food safety issues, "from the farm or fishing vessel to the table", which requires scientists, researchers and others to move beyond the confines of their own disciplines, professions and ways of thinking, to explore new ways of organizing science, in search of solutions to new challenges (UCI, 2020)

The One Health approach means managing food safety-quality, with an integrated vision from the territory to the national, regional and global levels, considering the importance of all organizations in the agri-food chain, such as large companies, SMEs, small businesses, family farming, farms and fishermen's cooperatives among others. (UCI, 2020)

In an effort to provide scientific information around the topics that concern us and in the framework of the COVID19 pandemic, ILSI Mesoamerica is organizing a series of webinars that aim to:

  • Favor the positioning of science as the basis for the development of all human activities and in compliance with the objectives of sustainable development.
  • Provide scientific information that provides clear information and that allows us to fight against false news in our framework.
