The Latin American Nutrition and Health Study (ELANS) is a multicenter cross-sectional nutrition and health research of a nationally representative sample of urban populations in eight countries in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela). A standard study protocol was designed to evaluate the nutritional intake, physical activity levels and anthropometric measurements of 9,000 registered participants.
The study was based on a complex and multistage sample design and the sample was stratified by sex, age (15 to 65 years) and socioeconomic level. A small-scale pilot study was conducted in each country to test the procedures and tools.
The general objective of the project is to provide reliable and up-to-date data on the intake of beverages and food and physical activity and its association with the anthropometric profile of a representative sample of the urban population of eight Latin American countries, by region, socioeconomic status, age and gender; and with this to provide new scientific evidence for the analysis of the relationship between energy and nutrient intake, energy expenditure and anthropometric measurements.
In this way and jointly, the subsidiaries of ILSI in Latin America (Mexico, Mesoamerica, North-Andean, South-Andean, Brazil and Argentina) and the scientific commission of ELANS, have proposed to hold an event in order to facilitate an platform for the dissemination of scientific information contained in ELANS addressed to academics and government officials, allowing them to guide new research and decision making in public policy.
For this occasion, the participation of the 8 main investigators of ELANS will be counted.
