Analysis of Overweight, Obesity, Physical Activity and Self-Estimation of Children in the Metropolitan Area of the Educational Region of Panama City, Panama

The high levels of overweight and obesity that produce diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases are a public health threat that starts from childhood through the adult age, altering a person´s quality of life directly. The purpose of this study is to determine the levels of overweight and obesity, the levels of physical activity and self-esteem of children aging 9 to 13 years, in educational establishments from the center of Panama City, Panama.

Thirteen (13 educational centers participated pertaining to eight (8 territories from the capital of the country, where 748 students were evaluated. The instruments used to measure these variables were the measuring rod, the weight scale to measure the body mass index, the PAQ-C survey to measure the physical activity, and LAWSEQ to measure self-esteem in children. The studied population showed 17% of the students to be overweight, 13% obese, 70.05% with moderate physical activity, and 25.67% with low levels of physical activity. As far as self-esteem is concerned, 50.5% showed average self-esteem and 44% low self-esteem.

In conclusion, it is important to perform physical activities as prevention and attention actions to obesity, overweight, and improvement of self-esteem. e analysis of the results indicates a higher prevalence of obesity in girls, and greater levels of physical activity in boys, in the case of self-esteem, age plays an important role in personal perception, especially in the female sex.

The objective of this research was to analyze the prevalence of overweight or obesity, levels of physical activity and self-esteem in a Nicaraguan school region. 731 students from 10 schools in the department of León Nicaragua were evaluated, of which 260 were fourth, 226 fifth and 245 sixth grade, aged between 9 and 13 years. To measure each variable in the study, height and weight were evaluated, for the calculation of BMI, the physical activity questionnaire for older children (PAQ-C) and the self-esteem questionnaire (LAWSEQ).

The objective of this study was to determine the BMI (Body Mass Index), the self-esteem and the level of physical activity of the children of the second cycle of the city of San Salvador. 11 schools participated: 359 (47 %) were girls and 399 (53 %) girls, with an average age of 11.49 ± 1.34 years, a height of 147.11 ± 0.10 cm, and a weight of 47.53 ± 13.758 Kg. Weight, height was evaluated, body mass index, the perception of physical activity and self-esteem, through the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C), and Lawrence Self-Esteem Questionnaire (LAWSEQ).

It is concluded that the data obtained in the variables of body mass index, physical activity level, and self-esteem in the students evaluated are alarming, which suggests the need to develop strategies for the intervention of this problem.

The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of overweight, obesity, levels of physical activity and self-esteem of the school population of San Pedro Sula. The sample was 825 schoolchildren aged 9-13 years, which were divided into 416 women and 409 men. BMI measurements (Kg / H ^ 2), level of physical activity (PAQ-C) and self-esteem (LAWSEQ) were performed. A factor analysis (ANOVA) was performed to observe differences between groups and the Pearson correlation for the study of the relationship of variables with 95% confidence intervals.

The objective was to analyze the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the level of physical activity and self-esteem of the II Cycle school population of the central canton of Heredia. It was a cross-sectional descriptive-comparative study in which 442 boys, fourth, fifth and sixth-grade students were analyzed, of which 234 were boys and 208 girls aged between 9 and 13 years. The measurement of weight and height was performed for the calculation of the body mass index, the physical activity questionnaire for older children (PAQ-C) and the LAWSEQ questionnaire for the measurement of self-esteem level was applied.
